What’s your name? Lance Walker
I have been a farmer since: I was born.
I’ve been a Farm At Hand user since: 2013. Farm At Hand has helped me to organize and keep track of the vast lineup of equipment we now have.
Where do you farm? Borden, Saskatchewan
What do you grow? Canola, Hemp, Malt Barley, Red Lentils, Organic Flax, Timothy.
Tell us a little bit about why you became a farmer and who you farm with. I stepped into full time farming during the worst drought we had ever experienced. My family had to literally put everything we had into the farm to keep it going. We could not even afford to pay a hired man, but it was the best thing that could have happened. We now all farm together and have a large, successful, diverse and expanding farm with all kinds of opportunity for everyone evolved. My parents, brother and sister and myself all work together on the farm.
What’s one of your favourite moments when you’re out in the fields? To see a job (seeding, harvesting, tilling) done perfectly.
Has technology changed the way you farm? How so? Yes, I now spend 80% of my time in front of a computer or some kind of device.
What is your biggest challenge this growing season? Weather. Weather. Weather.
Do you think the way we farm and produce food will change in the next 10 years? If yes, how? Yes. There will be larger commercial farms growing commodities and there will be more smaller organic type farms growing food.
If there is one thing you want the general population to know about farming, what would that be? Farmers will produce what consumers demand.
